How Do Memory Care and Assisted Living Care Differ?

If you’ve been exploring an assisted living community for yourself or a loved one, you may have come across the phrases “memory care” and “assisted living.” If so, you may be wondering what exactly the difference is between the two.

The Mission at Agua Fria Senior Living offers both memory care and assisted living services in Peoria, Arizona. We’ll explain what services are included with each level of care so you can decide which option is best suited for you or your loved one.

Memory Care

If your loved one struggles with memory loss or daily routines are becoming more difficult to recall, our memory care services could help. There are three main components to our comprehensive memory care.

1. Memory Care Studios

We know that your loved one wants to feel comfortable in their own living space. That’s why we have studio apartments designed just for our memory care residents. Each studio is spacious and ADA accessible and features a walk- or wheel-in shower with grab bars.

Our studio apartments also come equipped with emergency pull cords in case your loved one requires immediate assistance. Amenities include cable and utilities, apartment maintenance, weekly housekeeping, daily trash removal, and personal laundry and linen service.

We want our memory care residents to feel safe, comfortable, and secure in their space. We believe our memory care studios will help them feel that way.

2. Memory Care Neighborhoods

We understand that patients with dementia or Alzheimer’s have a tendency to wander. That’s why we’ve created a memory care neighborhood with everything they need close to home.

Conveniently located on the ground floor, our memory care neighborhood includes a dining room, activity room, and lounge that provides plenty of opportunities to socialize. It also features a large central gathering room with access to the enclosed outdoor courtyard. Should your loved one need assistance finding their way back to their room, we have a dedicated nurse’s station available to help.

3. Memory Care Programs

We believe in a holistic approach to memory care services. To achieve the very best results, we offer programs that incorporate art, sensory integration, music, and pet therapy, as well as a state-of-the-art exercise program.

We believe in engaging the mind, body, and spirit through these programs so our residents experience the most optimal outcome. All of these programs are administered by our very caring team, which is licensed, certified, and specially trained to provide support to those living with dementia and memory care needs.

Assisted Living

While our memory care program is designed for residents experiencing Alzheimer’s or dementia, our assisted living care option is for residents who want to remain independent but who may need a little extra help with daily activities.

At the Mission at Agua Fria, your care will be personalized to your needs. One of our licensed nurses will perform an evaluation at move-in to develop your personal care plan. We will also learn your interests and preferences so we can deliver the level of assistance required while also allowing you to maintain your independence.

Our assisted living apartments feature four different floor plans, some of which come with kitchenettes so you can even cook your own meals. Like our memory care studios, they also include emergency-response pull cords and a spacious bathroom with a walk- or wheel-in shower with grab bars.
