What is mindfulness and why is it important for older adults? Mindfulness is when you focus intensively on yourself, making yourself aware of what you are feeling and sensing at that moment. You are not thinking about the past, the future, or any other worries. You are entirely devoted to being in the present, without any judgment or any sort of interruption.
Mindfulness is important, as it helps us regulate our emotions and decreases anxiety, depression, and stress. But achieving mindfulness can be easier said than done at times. There are many activities that can help you. Here are three mindfulness activities for older adults.
1. Breathing Exercise
One of the most common ways to practice mindfulness is with breathing exercises. First, find a quiet place where you can sit without interruption and then close your eyes. Once you are comfortable, focus all your attention on your breathing. How does your body feel as you breathe in and out? Do not force anything; continue to breathe naturally. Do this for just five minutes when you are first starting out and then you can increase the time.
2. Journaling
Writing in a journal is one of the best ways to express your feelings. If you do not think you can handle sitting quietly focusing on your breathing, you may want to try mindful journaling. This can be either structured or unstructured—whatever you want. If you prefer a more structured activity, think of a long-term topic you can write about and focus on daily. If you prefer unstructured, just write down what you are feeling at the moment. It can be as simple as writing down your goals and intentions for the day or describing the mood that you are in.
3. Walking
You have heard all your life about the importance of going for a walk, but did you know it’s a great mindfulness activity for older adults? Some people have difficulty staying focused when they are sitting completely still. If this sounds like you, mindful walking is the activity for you. Find a quiet, peaceful, not-populated area to take a walk. While walking, focus on the feeling of walking and on your surroundings. If your mind starts to wander, bring it back. Think about how your feet feel on the ground, how the breeze feels on your face, how beautiful the colors around you look, and so on.
